How to join us

People often ask how they can join our church in Mt Vernon.  Turns out that's kind of a tricky question to answer.  The way we see things, if you are asking that question you very likely already "belong"; or at the very least, we have already claimed you as one of our own.

You see, we don't draw a lot of lines around here.  We don't distinguish those on the inside from those on the outside; those who belong from those who don't.  Because we've noticed that every time a church builds a wall to protect itself from outsiders, Jesus punches a hole in that wall and escapes to the "outside".

And so, just like the communion table, the doors of this congregation are open to anyone and everyone.  No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.  If you find help and hope in this fellowship you are welcome--whenever you want to come and for as long as you want to stay.

Here's how we say the same thing "officially" in the constitution of the Mt Vernon Zwingli United Church of Christ:

Membership in the Mt. Vernon (Zwingli) United Church of Christ:

In this church we strive to follow Jesus and to imitate the open welcome and the unconditional acceptance he showed to every person he met.  Therefore, membership in this congregation is conferred on any who find meaning, hope or help in this fellowship.  We recognize all people as children of God, welcome all people to worship and serve with us and consider all who come to be a necessary part of this fellowship, with all its privileges and responsibilities, whenever they come and for as long as they stay.

So, should you join with us?  I don't know.  Come and see.  We'll figure that out together as we go along.
